The building was designed by William Henry Playfair and the foundation stone laid by Prince Albert in 1850.
The gallery opened to the public in 1859 and the collection contains outstanding paintings, drawings and prints by great artists from the Renaissance to Post-Impressionism, including Velaquez, El Greco, Titian, Vermeer, Constable, Monet and Van Gogh.
It also houses the national collection of Scottish art featuring works by Taggart, Wilkie, Ramsay and Raeburn.
