In Roman times the town was famous for its salt springs and salt was produced up until the Middle Ages.
Fire destroyed much of the town in 1583 and houses were rebuilt in the Elizabethan style, others remain from buildings in Welsh Row dating from 1638.
Churche's Mansion built in 1577 by Richard Churche, now a fine restaurant.
