URPoint Details
Musselburgh sits on the banks of the River Esk looking out over the Firth of Forth, and the English burned most of the town in 1544 and again in 1547 but it is now a charming town.
Upstream from the A1 that crosses the River Esk is a stone bridge of unknown date, but was certainly used in 1314 by Edward II’s forces when he retreated from Bannockburn.
The Tolbooth dates from 1591 I which an old clock given in 1496 by the Dutch and nearby is the Mercat Cross.
An old three arched footbridge still spans the river upstream from Rennie’s bridge of 1907.
