URPoint Details
The settlement here was called Mundana (a defensive mound) a name given by the Saxon invaders. They recognised the natural defensive position and enhanced it by constructing their own moated enclosure. It became a thriving settlement.
The building of the small parish church was begun in the 13th century with a timber framed semi-octagonal belfry added 400 years later.
The church was part of the Abbey of St John in Colchester and the chantry land included Iltney Farm.
