In a district once of coal mines and ironworks is situated on the banks of the River Ayr with a church built in 1650.
To the southeast rises Cairn Table at 1,944ft with prehistoric cairns and Stony Hill at 1,843ft.
To the southwest is Airds Moss a barren expanse of moorland where on 22 July 1680 a fight took place between the Royalists and the Covenanters in which Richard Cameron who gave his name to the famous regiment (Cameron Highlanders) was slain. A monument commemorates the event.
