Thoby Hall, built on the site of Thoby Priory was founded by the canons of the Augustinian order. The first prior Tobias and the charter date back to 1151.
The town derived its name from Robert de Mountney.
The church of St Giles dates from Norman times and has a very interesting tower supported by huge wooden beams.
