URPoint Details
A pleasant market town on the River Wansbeck, with a town hall built by Vanburgh in 1714, and a 15th century clock tower that once was the town gaol. The clock still strikes a curfew each evening.
A feature of the town is the number of bridges which cross the river, in addition to a path of stepping stones.
The huge battlement tower by the Great North Road is not a castle, but the Police Station. The Norman castle is privately owned, and is not open to the public.
