The royal burgh stands on a spit jutting out into the River South Esk, the spit encloses a tidal lagoon known as The Montrose Basin.
In the centre of town stands the 220ft steeple built in 1832 and from ‘Big Peter’, a 300 year old bell, rings the 10pm curfew each night.
A well known resort and fishing port with excellent sands and situated on the estuary of the South Esk River.
Montrose possessed a fine strong castle occupied by Edward I in 1296 before Wallace destroyed it during the following year.
