The name comes from the Latin mons acutus or pointed hill which is St Michael’s Hill with its conical knoll and topped with a 60ft tower, built in 1760 as a folly.

The houses in village are mostly built with Ham Hill stone, many of the homes in South Street were once weaver’s homes when the glove industry flourished in the 18th century.
