URPoint Details
The Normans built a fortified bridge in 1262 to guard the town and is the only one of its kind now left in Britain.
The castle did not last so well, being mostly destroyed in the Civil War of 1646. Harry of Monmouth, who became Henry V, was born within its walls.
A Monmouth Cap, the woollen headgear reputedly worn by the Monmouth archers at Agincourt on whom Henry V relied heavily for his victory, can be seen in the local museum.
A statue of Henry V stands high up on the facade of the neo-Classical Shire Hall of 1724, overlooking Agincourt Square where another statue of C. S. Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, pioneer aviator and the first man to fly the channel in both directions can be found.
