URPoint Details
A village situated in the Ashby Woulds area.
The Industrial Revolution led to great demand for coal and the Ashby Canal, which was begun in 1794, provided a vital link between Moira Collieries and Oxford, London and the southeast. The name originated when Baron Rawdon, who also held the Irish title Earl of Moira, built the Stone Rows (now demolished) to accommodate workers for his furnace, foundry and colliery. These were built in the Irish collage tradition and known as Moira Town after his Irish estates.
Lady Turner - who formerly lived at Donisthorpe Hall - in memory of her son, Stuart Keates Turner, who died aged 32, presented a clock to the area in 1932.
