The iron and steel that once was smelted in the town made it like a miniature Sheffield. But since the industry ceased and the town is quite depressing. But there is beauty surrounding the town at Black Combe makes an impressive back cloth and there are superb sands from Haverigg.
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a Norman and later building, near the castle. Inside are box-pews and monuments one with an alabaster effigy from 1494
