Midhurst

Midhurst , England

URPoint Details

A small market town nestled in a sheltered valley, the buildings and houses are of timber, stucco and brick.
The townsfolk, when they wanted to add to their homes, would build out over the existing structure.
A fine example is to wander down South Street.
At the bottom of Church Hill, are a pretty group of cottages.

On the outskirts of town are the ruins of Cowdray Park, a substantial, fortified mansion built in the first half of the 16th century, by the Earl of Southampton and was destroyed by fire in 1793.

The famous Cowdray Park polo grounds, form part of the estate in which the ruins stand.

The area also offers many delightful country picnic spots such as Benbow Ponds, St Anne’s Hill where the foundations of the ancient Bohun Castle can be seen.
