URPoint Details
The Midford Valley Walk, starting from Combe Down Parish Church, 2ᄑ mile walk.
Very little on roadways fairly easy going public footpaths with about 6 stiles.
Expect to find some mud, particularly around Tucking Mill during wet periods, and be prepared to take short but rather steep climb on the return journey.
Stout footwear recommended. Please keep to the footpaths which are clearly signposted and waymarked with yellow arrowheads.
Down into the Midford Valley to Tucking Mill where once stood a Flock Miller and Fuller\'s Earth Works.
Beside the Mill site is the house wherin lived William Smith, \The father of English Geology\" who, in 1794, was apponted engineer to the Somerset Coal canal which, in 1805-1898 passed his front door just a few yards away.
The overall site is now occupied by the Wessex Water Authority with a three million gallon man-made lake which, in 1981, was opened as a fishing centre exclusively for the disabled who may fish free of charge, from the specially constructed platforms that jut out into the water.
The return journey will take you through the small but delightful Priory and Beech Woods."""
