This attractive town, set on the steep hillside above the River Tees and close to the spectacular waterfall of High Force and Caldron Snout.
Winding, drystone walls line the road leading to the village with its terraces above the River Tees, with rugged sandstone houses and buildings and snug whitewashed cottages.
The parish Church of St Mary was completely rebuilt in the 1870s and incorporated in the nave are several interesting decorated medieval tombstones discovered under the foundations of the former church.
