URPoint Details
A sandstone village at the foot of the Pennines and has a green planted with clusters of trees. The village sits in the path of high winds sometimes 80mph gales from Cross Fell known locally as the Helm Wind, which may even strike when the air 6 miles away is scarcely moving.
The Romans built a road here, the maiden Way, which can be followed across the fells and in some places it is 20ft wide and reveals traces of the original paving.
