The village mentioned in the Domesday Book was once a site of the Knights Hospitallers.
A licence was granted in the 1264 for an annual fair to be held.
The main street has 18th century thatched cottages which lead to the church and Melchbourne Park. The St John Arms pub has the crest of the St John family.
