The former seat of the Earls of Cassillis, head of a powerful Lowland family of the Kennedys and the restored 17th century Maybole Castle in the High Street was their town house.
Dunure Castle was the scene of torture on the Abbot of Crossraugel by the 4th Earl of Cassillis in 1570 when he roasted him, to make him give up his abbey lands.
To the north near Cargilston farm is a monument to six Covenanters drowned in a slave ship off the Orkney Islands after having being captured in the battle of Bothwell Brig in 1679.
To the northeast is Cassillis House on the banks of the River Doon incorporating an old Border peel tower.
