Church Rd, Maulden MK45 2AU, England
URPoint Details
The parish church still retains its 15th century ironstone tower and has a chest dating from the 14th century.
In the churchyard is the Buce family mausoleum, who lived at Houghton House.
A large monument with vaulted crypt in Gothic structure, rebuilt in 1859. It was erected in 1656 in memory of Diana, Countess of Elgin, whose family held the manor from 1635 until 1738. It is an extraordinarily elaborate piece of work and Horace Walpole is reputed to have described it as the most ridiculous thing that was ever imagined.
The figure on the main monument, which shows a body rising from an open tomb, was known locally as 'the lady in a punch bowl'.
