Maud Heath's Causeway

Maud Heath's Causeway

Bremhill

URPoint Details

A paved way recalls Maud Heath, a Wiltshire market woman who, in 1744 bequeathed her savings to a build a 4 mile long causeway from Wick Hill, near Bremhill, by way of Langley Burrell, which was here home, to Chippenham in order to avoid the bad rutted track of the period.

At Wick Hill, a tall column is topped by her statue, and at Kellaways, a pillar dated 1698 with a sundial, stands by a 64 arched bridge carrying the causeway. An inscribed stone near the Bremhill column marks the commencement of the path, and another in Chippenham churchyard records its termination.
