Matlock is one of the oldest settlements in the Derwent Valley, being formed of eight separate townships. It was the industrialist John Smedley who accelerated the development of Matlock as a spa town, the workers from his mills at Lea benefited from his beliefs in water treatment. The coming of the railway brought further development (and day trippers from industrial cities) to Matlock and Matlock Bath.
