URPoint Details
Founded in 1962, the 1996 Solheim Cup was played over the Old Course at St Pierre, the latest of many top events to be staged on this layout, just across the Severn Bridge. Built in a former deer park, it is a beautiful parkland setting with an abundance of mature trees for two 18 hole, 6785/5732 with par 73/68 courses of interesting golf.
St Pierre of Caen was one of William the Conqueror's most faithful lieutenants and his reward was a domain overlooking the Severn Estuary which became the site of a 14th century manor house. It was here that King Henry V, who came up the road at Monmouth, stored the Crown Jewels while he defeated the French at Agincourt.
The house and adjacent church form the heart if the St Pierre hotel. Professionals and amateurs alike fine the par three, 18th across a lake and uphill towards the ancient chimney stacks both daunting and memorable.
