Situated in the valley of the Kennet the town has suffered some terrible times one in particular was the fighting during the Civil War and evidence can still be seen on the north face of St Mary’s church.
In 1653 a great fire destroyed about 250 buildings and after rebuilding was again destroyed by fire in 1679 and it was then ruled that there was to be no more thatching on roofs.
The broad High Street has beautiful Georgian buildings and two churches – one at either end.
On the Downlands around the town are many historic remains including the hill fort at Barbury Castle, and the White Horse cut into the hillside in 1804 by schoolboys.
