A hunting centre, by the River Welland, with a broad triangle with chequered pavements where markets have been held every Wednesday since 1204.
There are some fine Georgian buildings including the Three Swans Inn with its 18th century wrought iron sign.
The tethering post for farmers’ horses can still be seen in the main street (A6) and the timbered house on wooden pillars dates from 1614 was the former Grammar School.
The church to St Dionysius is 14th century of the Decorated and Perpendicular styles and has a tower and spire soaring to 161ft.
