Mapledurham - Church of St Margaret

Mapledurham RG4 7TR, England

URPoint Details

St Margaret's Church is 14th century and sits in an isolated and beautiful Thameside position, with The House beyond a stately 18th century gateway. William Butterfield refaced the tower with a flint and brick chequer patter in 1863. The medieval church has a railed-off Roman Catholic south chapel, owned by the lords of Mapledurham House, and originally built to house the tomb of Sir Robert Bardolf, d1395. See the fine brass to him and the tomb effigy of Sir Richard Blount, d1628, who started to build Mapledurham House late in the 16th century. Lady Cecily Blount lies beside him with a fancy coiffure. There is 15th century stained glass in the chancel. One of William IV's children by Mrs Jordan was one time vicar and is buried in the churchyard.
