URPoint Details
An imposing stone castle perched above the sandy beach of Manorbier Bay with its tidal pools and rocks of red sandstone.
The de Barri family, Norman barons, built the Castle and it was always more a baronial residence than a fortress.
Medieval castles were practically self-sufficient and had their own mills, orchards and fields: the stream below powered the castle's corn mills. Ciraldus Cambrensis, 'Gerald the Welshman', was born here in 1146, and he claimed it was the 'pleasantest spot in Wales'.
