Major-General Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive KB, M, FRS, was born on 29 September 1725 in Market Drayton. Later he was to become known as Clive of India, a British officer who established the military and political supremacy of the East India Company in Bengal. Clive left India for the last time in February 1767 and In 1769, he acquired the house and gardens at Claremont near Esher and commissioned Lancelot "Capability" Brown to remodel the garden and rebuild the house.  

He died 22 November 1774 at Berkeley Square, Westminster in London
