Maharajah Duleep Singh was born in Lahore on the 6 September 1838.

After the assassinations of four of his predecessors, Duleep Singh became Maharaja of the Sikh Empire at the age of five in September 1843, He was later exiled to Britain at age 15 where he was befriended and much admired by Queen Victoria, who is reported to have written of the Punjabi Maharaja: "Those eyes and those teeth are too beautiful". The Queen was godmother to several of his children.

During his exile in Great Britain he stayed at Claridges in London, Wimbledon and Roehampton. Invited to stay at Osborne House by Queen Victoria he soon became bored after some time and returned to Roehampton where he lived for three years before deciding to return to India.

He died in Paris on 22 October 1893 aged 55 years.
