The shell of an uncompleted 'lodge' or garden house, begun in 1595 by Sir Thomas Tresham and designed in the shape of a cross. The exterior incorporates friezes inscribed with religious quotations and signs of the Passion. Sir Thomas died before the building was completed and his son Francis Tresham, was then imprisoned in connection with the Gunpowder Plot.
