The Romans named it Portus Lemanis and built a fort her in the 3rd century and was a port used by the legions occupying the nearby castle of Studfall now a ruin on high ground to the south.
About 300yds from the Roman fort on a prominent hill stands Lympne Castle, a fortified manor house originally built in the 14th century.
Early in the 19th century it was largely rebuilt and restored, but still retains much of its former character.
The parish church of St Stephens dates from the Norman period, but has undergone much rebuilding and restoration. It has an old square font of Bethersden marble.
