Lymington - Hampshire

Lymington

URPoint Details

Due to the sheltered harbour Lymington is a sailors haven, but in the town with its cobbled streets are some lovely Georgian buildings and a lovely church.

The town once was a busy port for ‘salt’, known as salterns and the saltworks closed in the 19th century.

There is a little village on the B3055 to the northwest with the delightful name of Tiptoe.

The 13th century Church of St Thomas the Apostle has a fine tower dating from 1600 and a rather odd shaped cupola from the 18th century. The nave and galleries are Georgian and the north chapel is 13th century.

Buckland Rings, 1mile north is an ancient Iron Age earthworks with triple rampart. In 1744 there were Roman coins dug up from here.
