In the 13th century when Edward I used the harbour as a base for his warships the name of ‘Regis’ (meaning the king) was added.
The five small beaches and a 14th century breakwater called The Cobb and the Golden Cap stands at 617ft is the highest cliff on the south coast.
The River Lym which once drove the medieval cloth mills still surges on through the town and if you walk through Coombe Street, you can see the area of converted mills.
The Church of St Michael built in 1500 on three levels and the west porch is the nave of an earlier Norman church on the site. It has a carved 17th century pulpit and a chained Bible. On the north wall is 16th century tapestry.
