The Saxons settled here near Biscot Mill on the north side of the city and the moat house is the one surviving example of its kind.

St Mary's church founded in 1131, is built of chequered flint and limestone and is the largest church in the county and one of the finest medieval churches in England. Set in the heart of Luton, Bedfordshire's largest town, this conspicuous, mainly Perpendicular building has a fine font, monuments and screens.
