Lower Winchendon

Lower Winchendon , England

URPoint Details

Lower and Upper Winchendon stand two miles apart, on the north side of the River Thames to the west of Aylesbury. Closest to the river is Lower Winchendon, a village of thatched cottages and beautiful gardens and the small church that still retains its box pews, with its west gallery and fine Jacobean pulpit complete with tester.

The lovely village of Nether Winchendon is located a mile north of the Aylesbury to Thame road. By the river is Nether Winchendon house, the 18th century Tudor manor house that was the home of Spencer Bernard, Governor of New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Upper Winchendon, overlooking the Thame's riverside meadows, was once in the possession of Cardinal Wolsey. Much of the church here is Norman. There are 16th century pews and the wooden pulpit dates back to the 14th century. The extensive estate of Eythrope reaches to the river and in its grounds is the Pavilion, a house built for Alice de Rothschild in 1883.
