Louisburgh Island, the gateway to both Clare Island and Inishturk. Located 6.5km from Louisburgh is Roonagh Pier.
Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the wild Atlantic coast with internationally acclaimed beaches. Louisburgh, which in Irish means ‘meadow of buttercups’, was renamed after an uncle of the Marquess of Sligo, who in 1758, helped capture the French fortress of Louisburgh in Nova Scotia. The area offers interesting archaeological heritage and several megalithic tombs. There is a beautiful forest walk at Old Head, just outside town.
