URPoint Details

To the southwest are the remains of Laughton Place with a 16th century tower, showing the famous ‘Pelham Buckle’ above the windows. The restored church contains Pelham tombs in the vaults. Between wooded countryside and flat marshlands lies the attractive village of Laughton. A curious buckle emblem can be seen on the church tower, on the ruined tower of Laughton Place south of the village and on several buildings around the area. This was the badge of the Pelhams and date back to the Battle of Poitiers in 1356, when Sir John Pelham captured the French King and was awarded the Badge of the Buckle of the King’s Sword belt by a grateful Edward III.
