URPoint Details
As the name suggests the village has a long main street with pretty thatched cottages. The village stands in the valley of the River Test, noted for its great angling.
To the northwest is Hiarwood Forest with a beech avenue leading from the Andover road to Deadman’s Plack which commemorates the murder of Ethelwulf by King Edgar (959-76). Edgar apparently sent Ethelwulf to search for a beauty by the name of Elfrida. Unfortunately Ethlwulf fell in love with her and married her. When Edgar found out he killed poor Ethelwulf and then took Elfrida for his queen.
