Long Wittenham - Church of St Mary

Long Wittenham

URPoint Details

The Church of St Mary, begun around 1120, is on the site of a previous Saxon church.

The church is mainly 13th and 14th century, with a carved chancel arch, poppyhead stalls, pulpit, screen and font cover are Jacobean.

The font is a rare Norman lead one; it was later encased in wood, and this preserved it from iconoclastic Parliamentarian soldiers in the 17th century.

The timber porch is attractive but it is the piscina of two angels forming a canopy protecting a small sculptured knight. It is the smallest monument in England a small stone effigy of Gilbert de Clare
