Parliament Square, Westminster SW1P 3PA, England

URPoint Details

Kings, queens, statesmen and soldiers poets, priests, heroes and villains - the Abbey is a must-see living pageant of British history. Every year Westminster Abbey welcomes over one million visitors who want to explore this wonderful 700-year-old building which is the coronation church of England. Thousands more flock to the Abbey for worship at daily services.

The Chapter House, built by the royal masons in 1250 and faithfully restored in the 19th century, contains some of the finest examples of medieval English sculpture to be seen. The building is octagonal, with a central column, and still has its original floor of glazed tiles. Its uses have varied, but in the 14th century it was used as a meeting place for Benedictine monks of the abbey, and also for members of Parliament.

The 11th century Pyx Chamber houses the Abbey treasures, reflecting its use as the strongroom of the exchequer from the 14th to 19th centuries.

The Abbey Museum contains royal effigies.
