A very pretty Annandale town with lots of interesting shops and has a very moving tribute in the cemetery of the passengers killed from the terrible air disaster.
The Old Tower was once the town gaol.
To the east flows the Water of Milk and nearby is Milk Castle with its fine gardens.
The battle of Dryfe Sands in 1594 was fought here in which the Johnstones beat the Maxwells.
A Roman Camp near the flat-topped Birrenswark Hill has a group of fortifications.
To the northwest is Spedlins Tower beyond the River Annan and dated 1605.
