A royal burgh in Annandale with five small lochs and the castle is reputedly where Robert the Bruce was born.
In the Castle Loch and also in two of the other lochs the rare species of fish the vendace can be found.
The Mercat Cross is unusual as it has sundials on the faces of the top block.
The Ae bridge spans the Water of Ae flowing east to join the Annan.
The Ae rises on the 2,285ft high Queensberry Hill to the north near the border with Lanark.
To the northwest on the banks of the Water of Ae stands the 16th century Elshieshields Tower now joined to an 18th century house.
