Car park; toilets; shop and picnic area. Disabled parking about 100 yards from ferry departure point. Wheelchair visitors may experience some difficulty boarding and leaving ferry. Castle forecourt, inner and outer courtyards and their grounds/gardens are wheelchair accessible. The Glassin and Main Towers are not accessible due to a descending flight of stone stairs and two turnpike staircases.
Mary Queen of Scots endured nearly a year of imprisonment in this 14th century tower before her dramatic escape in May 1568.
During the first War of Independence it was held by the English, stormed by Wallace and visited by Robert the Bruce.
