A small and beautiful loch in the heart of the Galloway Highlands and reached from Bargrennan on the Girvan to Newton Stewart road.
Glen Trool is derived from Gaelic, Gleann t'struthail, meaning glen of the river-like loch.
The battle of Glen Trool took place in 1307 at the east end where the Bruce Memorial commemorates the victory over the English.
To the southwest end of the loch near Caldons Farm is an inscribed Martyrs' Stone dominated by Muldonach and Lamachan Hill rising to 2,349ft.
To the northeast rise the Rhinns of Kells dominated by Corserine at 2,668ft and Carlins Cairn at 2,650ft.
To the south are Millfire at 2,350ft and Meikle Millyea at 2,466ft with the lonely Loch Dungeon lying between them.
