Loch Spynie - Elgin

Loch Spynie - Elgin

Elgin , Scotland

URPoint Details

A loch in Moray, between Elgin and Lossiemouth.

The remains of the pre-Reformation Bishop's Palace of Spynie stand to the southwest and to the northeast Lossie Forest stretches along the Moray Firth coast.

Once open to the sea, the loch gave safe anchorage to ships.

However, it silted up and much of it was later reclaimed as farmland, having been much reduced in size as a result of drainage operations executed by Thomas Telford between 1808 and 1812.
