Loch Skeen - Moffat

Loch Skeen - Moffat

Moffat TD7 5LJ, Scotland

URPoint Details

A hill loch in north Dumfries and Galloway, to the north of White Coomb nearly 10 miles (16 km) northeast of Moffat.

The Tail Burn flows southeastwards from Loch Skeen to join the Moffat Water, en route forming a spectacular 61m (200 feet) waterfall known as the Grey Mare's Tail.

In 1962 land extending to Loch Skeen was purchased by the National Trust for Scotland which established a Visitor Centre with facilities for viewing peregrine falcon nest sites.

In the 1990s the vendace a herring-like fish which is extremely rare in Britain, was introduced into the loch as a refuge population due to deteriorating conditions in Bassenthwaite in the English Lake District. It is now thriving here.
