The westernmost of three connected lochs that together serve as a reservoir which maintains the level of the Helmsdale River to benefit its salmon fishery.
Loch Badanloch lies 10 miles (16 km) east of Altnaharra in Sutherland. The Rimsdale Forest lies to the northeast.
