Loch Cuithir - Uig

Loch Cuithir - Uig

Uig , Scotland

URPoint Details

A small loch on the Trotternish peninsula of Skye Loch Cuithir (occasionally Loch Cuither) lies 5 miles (9km) east southeast of Uig.

It is the source of the Abhainn nam Cnoc, which is a headstream of the Kilmartin River.

Diatomite was commercially extracted from the bed of the loch from 1899 until 1960, an industry which employed up to 80 people.

Nearby are the remains of a railway that transported this material to Invertote on the coast, where it was processed, dried and loaded onto boats for export.
