Loch Coruisk - Isle of Skye

Loch Coruisk - Isle of Skye

, Scotland

URPoint Details

This wild and picturesque loch lies in the most magnificent position and is separated from the sea loch of Loch Scavaig by a narrow neck of land.

Access is restricted to boat or pathway from Elgol by way of Camasunary and the notorious 'Bad Step' and also from Sligachan by means of the low Drumhain ridge.

The best and grandest view is by way climbing the steep and rocky little peak of Sgurr na Str at 1,623ft which rises at the southeastern end of Loch Coruisk.

This hill faces directly towards the Coolins.

Sir Walter Scott visited the loch in 1814 and in his 'Lord of the Isles' described the loch:

Rarely human eye has known

A scene so stern as that dread lake,

With its dark ledge of barren stone.'

The magnificence of the mountain scenery of Coruisk is rivalled only by Loch Hourn the finest of the great sea lochs of the Western Highlands.
