Loch Awe - Dalmally

Loch Awe - Dalmally

Loch Awe , Scotland

URPoint Details

This delightful narrow loch of 41 kilometres in length and about a mile wide and offers excellent fishing is one of the best known lochs in the West Highlands with road access on both sides.

The name in its old form of Lochow is associated with the Campbell Clan.

A freshwater loch in central Argyll that runs from Dalmally in the northeast to Ford near the head of Loch Craignish in the southwest.

Where the loch narrows and flows as the River Awe into Loch Etive one of its islets is known as Inishail (isle of rest) is the site of a nunnery.

Another islet is Fraoch Eilean which has the remains of a royal castle. Fraoch means ‘heather island' and is supposedly associated with the dragon-slaying hero Fraoch in the old Celtic tale of the daughter of Maeve.

On the shores of the loch are Lochawe, Port Sonachan, Ardcchonal Castle, Portinisherrich, Ford, Cladich, Taychreggan and a few little hamlets.

Loch Awe forms the southern boundary of the picturesque district of Lorne and the finest reach lies below the shadow of the twin peaks of Ben Cruachan rising to 3,689ft where the loch is drained by the River Awe flowing through the wild Pass of Brander towards Taynuilt.
