URPoint Details
Loch an Eilein a picturesque small loch in the Rothiemurchus Forest, 3 miles (5 km) south of Aviemore.
There is a visitor centre with exhibitions on the management of native Scots pine and on a small island stand the remains of a 15th-century castle, said to have been a property of Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch (1343 - 1405).
The level of the loch was raised in the 1770s to allow timber to be floated down to the Spey.
Ospreys can regularly be seen fishing here.
